Cost-Benefit Principle

In business, a rational decision is a way of choosing between two alternatives. It is rational to choose an action if, compared to the next best alternative, the extra benefit is greater than the extra cost.

Note that the economist's technical term for "extra" is marginal. You will often see references to marginal benefit and marginal cost.
